2013年10月15日，一家總部位於德州的專利授權公司Purple Leaf LLC（下稱Purple Leaf），於北加州聯邦地方法院（Northern District of California）提起訴訟，控告總部位於加州的電子商務系統商ZuoraInc（下稱Zuora），所提供的線上交易平台（Z-Commerce Platform），侵害其電子交易技術的專利權。Purple Leaf除要求法院禁止Zuora的侵權行為外，並要求Zuora負起損害賠償的責任。
被告Zuora是一間提供電子帳務平台（Billing Platform）服務的公司。以Zuora所提供的Z-Commerce Platform為例，此平台提供三種主要的功能：（1）Meter－提供客戶對消費者購買的產品或服務進行記錄與追蹤管理；（2）Price－提供客戶20種商品或服務訂價模式；（3）Bill－提供客戶帳單管理和電子支付功能（圖1）。此次，Purple Leaf就是指控Zuora提供的電子支付功能侵害其專利權。

本案系爭專利為美國專利編號US 8,527,407，專利名稱為「使用無線及行動設備進行電子交易方法與裝置（Process and Device for Conducting Electronic Transactions Using Wireless and Cellular Devices）」，於2013年9月3日核發，是Rani K. Yadav-Ranjan所研發的專利技術，原專利權人則是Purple Leaf LLC。本案系爭專利基本上就是以行動裝置進行電子支付交易的技術，原本是被設計用來支付罰單的電子交易系統。

A method for conducting a transaction based on a request for payment remittance information, comprising:
執行匯款支付要求的交易方法：
receiving from a payor, an authorization of at least one payment due on the request for a payment to a payee;
收款人對付款人應付的款項發出通知後，接收來自付款人的支付；
associating in a computer readable memory, the at least one payment with a payment request information;
將每筆支付對應的每筆付款通知儲存於電腦中；
sending to a wireless computing device at least one payment instruction;
將付款指示傳送到無線通訊裝置中；
initiating via the wireless computing device the at least one payment of an amount at least in part responsive to the at least one payment instruction; and
透過無線通訊裝置，將支付金額與付款指示相對應；
wherein the at least one payment has payment remittance information arranged within a computer readable data structure and delivered via the wireless computing device, the data structure comprising one or more data fields to hold data that is responsive to received information from the payee,
每一筆經由無線通訊裝置的支付在電腦裡都有匯款訊息，電腦中會有一或多個資料夾用來接收付款者的付款資料；
and wherein said payment remittance information further comprises a structured remittance data, wherein at least part of the payment remittance information is kept hidden from the payee.

此外，Purple Leaf目前擁有美國專利4項，其中3項（US 8,527,407、US 8,027,913及US 7,603,311）與電子交易有關，特別是US 7,603,311這個專利兩年多前已告過許多大廠，包括：Google、eBay和Amazon。（662字；圖1；表2）
