2012年11月14日，設於美國德拉瓦州的Driden Multicommunications公司向當地聯邦地區法院提起六件訴訟，起訴包括Verizon、AT&T、CenturyLink、 EarthLink、 Frontier Communications 和 MegaPath等六家電信公司，指控該等公司所提供的電話及網路服務，侵犯了其擁有之數據機專利。
Driden 公司於訴狀中指出被告公司所提供包括但不限於數位用戶迴路（Digital Subscriber Line，DSL）及standalone DSL服務，以及為了提供該服務相關的用戶端及中央辦公事設備、營運支援系統和客戶服務系統，侵犯了原告公司所擁有美國編號第 5,841,840 號，標題為「多重線路數據機及提供隨選聲音的方法」 (Multiple Line Modem and Method for Providing Voice on Demand) 之專利，致原告受到損害，從而向被告就其過去、現在及繼續發生的侵權行為補償原告損害賠償金。
本案系爭專利 '840 於 1998年11月24日獲證，該專利允許用戶的電話於非使用時，自動轉切到數據傳輸的兩個或更多的電話線；當電話進入使用時，它也允許用戶從多個線路切換到一個或兩個線路。Paradyne Corp.是該專利原專利權人，該專利於2001年和2011年分別有一次轉讓紀錄，最後一手是位於佛羅里達PATENT BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT, LLC。
