2014年5月12日，一家註冊於美國佛羅里達州的小公司American Navigation Systems, Inc.（以下簡稱AmNav公司），在佛羅里達中區地方法院（Florida Middle District Court）向手機產業的兩大巨頭，蘋果公司（Apple Inc.）以及韓國的三星公司（Samsung Electronics Co., LTD., Samsung Electronics America, Inc. and Samsung Telecommunications America, LLC）提出專利訴訟。
American Navigation Systems, Inc.公司成立於1997年2月26日，根據資料來看，其創辦人以及公司內部工作人員主要為Douglas J. Backman，目前未見推出任何主力產品或服務。
在本次訴訟中，AmNav公司主張蘋果公司及三星公司侵害其所持有的一件關於GPS技術（全球定位系統, global positioning system）的專利。GPS技術用於對地表物體進行精準定位，主要是利用電子信號方法來量測物體在多個（通常至少四個）GPS衛星之間的距離，從而通過計算物體在該些GPS衛星之間的相對位置而獲得在地表上的絕對位置。
AmNav公司在訴狀中指出，蘋果公司從2007年起推出的iPhone、iPad，以及三星公司從2009年6月起推出的Galaxy系列產品，使用了Google Maps及Apple Maps等等內建應用程式，該些內建應用程式在未經授權的情況下，使用了AmNav公司一項關於GPS定位及顯示的技術，侵害其專利權。
上述系爭專利為美國專利第5,902,347 號專利，其名稱為「Hand-held GPS-mapping device（手持式GPS定位裝置）」，其包括有18個專利請求項 (其中包含3個獨立項)，其專利申請號為08/835,037，申請日為1997年3月27日，於1999年5月11日獲准。
本件專利的發明人除了包括AmNav公司創辦人Douglas J. Backman之外，還包括了其他三位Gene V. Roe、Frank D. Defalco、William R. Michalson，而本件專利除了向美國專利局申請之外，也向歐盟及WIPO提交了申請，因此同一專利家族的相關申請案還包括了EP0941485A1, EP0941485A4, US5987380, WO1998022831 A1等等。(897字；表2)
