2013年10月23日，位於德州的專利授權公司CYVA Research Holdings（下稱CYVAHoldings），向東德州聯邦地方法院馬歇爾分院（Eastern District Of Texas Marshall Division）提起訴訟，控告總部位於華聖頓州的旅遊公司Expedia, Inc（下稱Expedia）及其子公司 Hotwire, Inc（下稱Hotwire；下和稱被告），所提供的線上服務系統，侵害其專利權。CYVA除要求法院禁止Expedia的侵權行為外，並要求Expedia負起損害賠償的責任。
原告CYVAHoldings其實是一間位於加州名為CYVA Research Corporation（下稱CYVACorporation）的公司今年四月在德州成立的控股公司。CYVA Corporation雖然提供資訊安全軟體與系統的服務，但是其主要的業務還是專利授權，從過去幾年的紀錄來看，CYVA Corporation不但積極在全球各地申請專利，也多次與廠商洽談專利授權合約；比較特別的是，轄下的CYVA Holdings自今年四月成立以來就不斷的對一些公司提起專利訴訟，短短半年，累計告了十家，因此，可以合理的推測CYVA Corporation設立CYVA Holdings的目的其實就是打專利戰。
被告Expedia目前是全球最大的線上旅遊服務業者，提供客戶各式各樣的旅遊套裝行程。這三年來，Expedia經常涉入專利訴訟案件，且涉入的角色都是被告，而疑似侵害的專利權則大多與網路線上服務技術有關。另一名被告Hotwire是Expedia旗下的品牌，提供的服務與Expedia大同小異。
本案系爭專利為美國專利編號US 8,195,569，專利名稱為「提供個人資料保護的電子商務系統（E-Bazaar Featuring Personal Information Security）」，於2012年6月5日核發，是由Kevin P. O'Neil等人所研發的專利，原專利權人是CYVA Corporation。（530字；表2）

只允許受信任的處理程序取得個人資料的方法，以及服務提供者和購買者PIA的規則在雙方在產品或服務的交易處理前正常運作。
