2013年10月25日獨立發明人John B. Adrain (以下稱Adrain)，於美國東德州聯邦地方法院馬歇爾分院(United States District Court, The Eastern District of Texas, Marshall Division)向Samsung Electronics Co., LTD.、Samsung Electronics America, INC.以及Samsung Mexicana S.A. De C.Y. (以下合稱Samsung)提起專利侵權訴訟，指控Samsung所設計販賣的智慧型電視，侵害Adrain所擁有的US5,831,669 (以下簡稱’669專利)美國專利。
Adrain是’669專利之發明人，該專利名稱為「具有影像儲存記憶及其相關設備之監試系統(Facility monitoring system with image memory and correlation)」。’669專利公告於1998年11月3日，2012年8月21日再經專利複審程序(Reexamination)審查。
Adrain於訴狀中指控Samsung之智慧型電視(Smart TVs)，可經由其內建相機鏡頭或是分開配置的相機，進行空間監視以及臉部辨識比對功能，該裝置本身或使用方式皆是利用或具體實施本案系爭專利技術，但卻未經Adrain授權即製造、使用、銷售、進口與提供販售相關產品，已然直接侵害’669專利。侵權產品包括LED 8000系列(如型號UN55F8000BF產品)、以及5500系列 (如型號UN32F5500AFZA以及VG-STC3000相機)之智慧型電視與週遭產品。此外，Samsung製造販賣上述侵權產品僅用於實施’669專利，此可從Samsung之產品手冊中，指導使用者如何利用該些侵權產品，進行與系爭專利技術相同之利用方法與功能可得知。而使用者也由於購買與使用上述侵權產品，而產生直接侵權行為，因此Samsung也成立幫助侵權與教唆侵權行為。Adrain請求法院核發永久禁制令，排除Samsung直接與間接侵權行為，並要求Samsung必須支付專利侵害損害賠償與訴訟相關費用。(893字；表3)
