2003年8月27日，總部位於德州的專利授權公司Remote Locator Systems(下稱Remote)向東德州聯邦地方法院馬歇爾分院(Eastern District Of Texas Marshall Division)控告Apple軟體侵權，Remote認為Apple在其作業系統iOS開發的App應用程式侵犯其電話自動定位專利，至少包含Find my Friend、Find my iPhone等兩項廣泛為iPhone使用者下載的App。
本案系爭專利為美國專利編號US 5,548,637，專利名稱為「回應撥入通話查詢人員與物件定位之裝置及方法(Method and apparatus for locating personnel and objects in response to telephone inquiries)」，於1996年8月20日通過實體審查並公告，歷經多次轉讓後，Remote於2013年8月15日取得專利權。本專利共有6個請求項，分成一個方法群組和一個系統群組，重點是偵測並自動定位人員或物件位置，要尋人或找物件時，撥電話到總機輸入特定編碼，即可轉接給最近的分機，完成自動轉接和定位的功能。

原告Remote是新興的專利授權公司，成立於2013年8月，在對Apple提起訴訟的同一日，Remote共計提起7件專利訴訟案，控告Google、AT&T、T-Mobile USA等通訊大廠，侵權內容大致雷同，皆屬針對本案系爭專利US 5,548,637提起的相關訴訟。但US 5,548,637使用例如紅外線的訊號發射器，貼附於醫院裡的儀器或給醫護人員配戴，在建築物中分區感測並記錄位置，當有電話撥入時提供位置資訊給電話系統，達到自動定位的效果，而Remote提起的多件訴訟案之系爭產品主要利用3G系統定位，因此侵權判定與案件後續發展尚待觀察。(612字；表3)
