2013年7月3日，總部設立於美國紐約州的Contemporary Visions, LLC(d/b/a Sonneman A Way Of Light,下稱Sonneman)於美國紐約州南區地方法院，對總部位於美國加州的Maxim Lighting International, Inc.、Maxim Lighting, Inc.及其公司負責人ZVI Sperling，與總部位於美國加州的Maxm Group Companies、ET2 Contemporary Lighting及其公司負責人Jacob Sperling之燈具產品，提出下列指控: (a)設計專利侵權；(b)商品外觀侵權及不公平競爭(trade dress infringement and unfair competition under theLanham Act, 15 U.S.C. §1051 et seq.)；(c)不公平競爭(New York Common Law Trade Dress Infringementcommon law unfair competition under the lawof the State of New York)；(d)稀釋與損及商譽(common law injury to business reputation and dilutionunder New York General Business Law § 360-I)等指控，要求禁制令、損害賠償，及訴訟律師費之補償等。
Sonneman於訴狀中指出，其設計師Robert A. Sonneman於1960年便開始設計燈具產品CONNETIX line，如吊燈、桌燈、壁燈及立燈等，並在市場上銷售額超過100萬美元。
本案系爭專利共8篇，皆為設計專利(Design Patent)，設計人皆為Robert A. Sonneman，詳細資料如下:
- US D671255，名稱為多變燈組之燈具(Light fixture with a variety of light clusters)，於2012年3月28日申請，2012年11月20日核發。
- US D671670，名稱為包含有多支撐之燈具(Light fixture with multiple supports)，於2012年4月9日申請，2012年11月27日核發。
- US D674951，名稱為包含有多支撐之燈具(Light fixture with multiple supports)，於2012年8月1日申請，2013年1月22日核發。
- US D674953，名稱為包含有多支撐之燈具(Light fixture with multiple supports)，於2012年8月1日申請，2013年1月22日核發。
- US D674955，名稱為包含有多支撐之燈具(Light fixture with multiple supports)，於2012年8月1日申請，2013年1月22日核發。
- US D674954，名稱為多變燈組之燈具(Light fixture with a variety of light clusters)，於2012年7月31日申請，2013年1月22日核發。
- US D674957，名稱為多變燈組之燈具(Light fixture with a variety of light clusters)，於2012年7月31日申請，2013年1月22日核發。
- US D684292，名稱為具有燈組之燈具(Light fixture with light clusters)，於2012年3月28日申請，2013年6月11日核發。
