2012年2月16日,美國以智財經營與技術管理為主要業務之Intellectual VenturesⅠLLC 以及Intellectual Ventures ⅡLLC，向美國主要之電信服務業者，包括AT & T Mobility LLC、T-Mobile USA, Inc.、Nextel Operations, Inc.、Sprint Spectrum L.P.，以及透過AT & T 高速Wi-Fi提供無線傳輸服務之SBC Internet Services, Inc.等公司，提出專利侵權訴訟，指控其透過協議所建構之全國無線電信通訊網路服務，其中的多媒體簡訊服務（MMS），侵犯Intellectual Ventures所擁有或取得專屬授權之多項專利權。
Intellectual Ventures共列出15項與行動通訊或電信傳輸有關的專利並指稱其受到侵犯，其中包括：
編號US RE41,490，名稱為「行動終端間的多媒體訊息傳輸 (Transmission of multimedia messages between mobile station terminals)」；
編號US 5,790,793，名稱為「創作、傳送、接收與處理資訊，包括連結到進一步資訊之位址的方法與系統 (Method and system to create, transmit, receive and process information, including an address to further information)」；
編號US 7,450,957，名稱為「阻絕電信系統服務使用之系統與方法 (System and method forblocking the use of a service in a telecommunication system)」；
編號US 5,339,352，名稱為「行動通訊系統之通話轉接(Directory assistance call completion via mobile systems)」；
編號US 6,131,032，名稱為「監控通訊系統使用者之方法與裝置(Method and apparatus for monitoring users of a communications system)」；
編號US 7,496,674，名稱為「在網路之有線與無線部分使用不同安全協定之系統、方法與基地台(System, method, and base station using different security protocols on wired and wireless portions of network)」等。
Intellectual Ventures Management, LLC是前Microsoft技術長Nathan Myrvold在2000年所創立的公司，其管理本案原告知兩家有限責任公司，並以收購專利進行授權、自行研發或合作研發技術等為主要事業內容；有人稱其是Patent Troll，也有人美其名為創意工廠。根據其在本案訴狀中所提供的資料，其專利組合（patent portfolio）已有超過3萬5千件資產，其中有超過3千件為自行研發或合作研發之成果，同時其已支付個人發明人超過4億美元來取得其發明權利，並透過授權活動賺取20億美元之收益。(669字；表1)
