2015年07月14日，註冊於美國德克薩斯州的專利授權公司 Rothschild Location Technologies LLC向美國德克薩斯州東區地方法院提起專利侵權告訴，指控註冊於美國德拉瓦州的乘車服務公司 Uber Technologies, Inc.侵犯其 US 7,917,285（下稱 '285號專利）及 US 8,606,503（下稱 '503號專利）專利之專利權。
本案爭議之 '285號專利及 '503號專利，兩案名稱均為「用以遠端輸入、儲存、及分享地址給位置資訊裝置的裝置、系統、及方法（Device, system and method for remotely entering, storing and sharing addresses for a positional information device）」。該 '285號專利及 '503號專利屬於同一專利家族，且該 '503號專利係 '285號專利之連續申請案（Continuation of application）。
‘285號專利之申請號 No. 11/413,890，申請日2006年04月28日，獲證日2011年03月29日。'503號專利之申請號 No. 12/882,754，申請日為2010年09月15日，獲證日為 2013年12月10日。值得注意的是，該專利家族尚有一件連續申請案仍在審查中（申請號 No.14/022,193，公開號 US20140012496 A1）。
'285號專利共計有18個申請專利範圍請求項，其中有2項獨立項。其獨立項之技術特徵略為：一個伺服器，其係用以為了一個至少包含一個地點且尚未儲存於該位置資訊裝置的地址，接收一個請求，再決定該至少包含一地點之地址，並傳送該被決定之地址至該位置資訊裝置；其中，該請求係接收自一個帶有第一識別碼的遠端電腦，且該伺服器係用以根據該接收到的第一識別碼，確認一個第二識別碼，進而識別出該位置資訊裝置。
'503號專利共計有15個申請專利範圍請求項，其中有2項獨立項。其獨立項之技術特徵略為：首先，接收一來自於一個第一位置資訊裝置並包含一個該第一位置資訊裝置的第一識別碼的請求 ; 再根據該被接收的第一識別碼，決定該第二識別碼，以識別出該至少一個第二位置裝置 ; 進而檢索該被請求之儲存於該至少一個第二位置資訊裝置的至少一個地址 ; 最後，傳送該至少一個被檢索的地址至該第一位位置資訊裝置。
原告 Rothschild Location 係一間由 Leigh M. Rothschild 成立的專利授權公司。Leigh M. Rothschild為一個人發明家，其所擁有專利涵蓋包括電腦伺服器、3D顯示、GPS技術等技術領域，現職為其所設立之Rothschild Trust Holdings, LLC公司的常務董事（Managing Director）。近來，Leigh M. Rothschild 廣泛設立不同的專利授權公司（例如Rothschild GPS Sharing Innovations, LLC; Rothschild Storage Retrieval Innovations, LLC），提起專利侵權訴訟，以尋求獲利。
被告 Uber 是一間跨國的乘車服務公司，總部設於美國加利佛尼亞州舊金山，主要營運模式係開發行動應用程式連結乘客和司機，以實現載客車輛之即時租賃及共乘的服務。乘客可以透過傳送簡訊或是使用行動應用程式來預約這些載客的車輛，其行動應用程式時還可以追蹤車輛的位置。然而，此商業模式在缺乏司機管理而危及乘客安全的情況下，在世界各國面臨著不少安全爭議及政府管制問題。
原告於其起訴狀陳稱，被告之伺服器係用以接收一包含位置的請求，進而用以決定該位置的地點並傳送該被決定的地點至該位置資訊裝置，明顯侵犯其 '285號及 '503號專利。故請求法院判決確認被告侵權，要求被告停止損害，並賠償原告之損失。(1420字；表3)
