新聞:(2008年4月24日老地方冰果室-蘋果買下 P.A. Semi 動向費疑猜)根據《富比世》的報導,蘋果日前以 2.78 億美元現金購買 P.A. Semi 微處理器設計公司,然而蘋果發言人 Steve Dowling 拒絕提供購買原因與交易細節,只表示購併小型技術公司是蘋果的常態,而 PA Semi 的網站也暫時關閉,是故無法得知蘋果之所以購入這家公司的原因為何[1]。
評析:
我們先來調查一下P.A. Semi與創辦人Dobberpuhl, Daniel W.專利資料。
至2008年4月24日止,P.A. Semi各國專利布局如表一所示。美國核准專利列表如表二所示。表三為以創辦人Dobberpuhl, Daniel W.為發明人美國核准專利,共計15件(另有10件為早期公開)。除以Dobberpuhl, Daniel W.為名外,也有3件專利以Dobberpuhl, Dan為名,均在Broadcom任職期間。

由表三可以看出創辦人研發歷程,包括1970年代在GE、1980至1990年代在Digital Equipment Corporation,2000年之後在Broadcom Corporation,最後2005年在P.A. Semi。
綜合上述專利調查與新聞中討論[1][2],我們覺得蘋果(Apple)的策略目標是清晰的。
首先是先將蘋果變綠,靠著低耗能處理器的開發,蘋果得以讓iPod與iPhone耗能量大幅降低(意味著電池使用時數更長,散熱較易處理);其次,藉由收購IC設計公司P.A. Semi,蘋果將開發出屬於自己的核心處理器,並僅用於自家系統中,無人可模仿,也無人可抄襲(不像軟體與外觀介面設計);第三,打造下世代行動軟硬體平台,除本文討論之處理器外,尚包括先前公布之iPhone 軟體地圖(Software Roadmap),如同微軟與Intel所建構之Wintel時代。
最後,除持續觀察P.A. Semi動向外,亦需仔細調查蘋果在內部所進行之晶片設計專利。Intel與Samsung兩大晶片供應商動向亦需注意觀察。(1121字;表3)
